Cosmetic Prosthesis (Lower Extremity)
What is a lower extremity cosmetic prosthesis?
A lower-extremity cosmetic prosthesis, or cosmetic cover, is a shaped foam, plastic, or similar covering that gives the limb a more natural contour under clothing. It is built over the functional components. It is not a substitute for a well-fitted socket or a safe knee and foot.
Why is a lower extremity cosmetic prosthesis used?
Many patients want the prosthesis to look like a limb in pants or shorts, not like exposed pylons and hardware. Covers also protect components from knocks and dirt. Highly detailed, skin-matched restorations are possible but are a separate choice from a basic shape cover. Function and alignment come first. Cosmesis is added when the patient wants it and the cover does not interfere with the knee or ankle.
What are the benefits of a lower extremity cosmetic prosthesis?
- More natural appearance under clothing
- Protects pylons, knees, and feet from scuffs
- Can be matched in volume to the sound limb
- Does not change the medical indication for the underlying prosthesis
