Cosmetic Prosthesis (Upper Extremity)
What is an upper extremity cosmetic prosthesis?
An upper-extremity cosmetic prosthesis is a restoration of the hand, partial hand, or arm in a skin-like material, often silicone, matched as closely as practical to the sound side. It may be entirely passive, or a cosmetic glove over a functional hand. Fine detail (nails, veins) is optional and is a separate fabrication choice.
Why is an upper extremity cosmetic prosthesis used?
People seek a cosmetic restoration when appearance in social or professional settings matters as much as, or more than, mechanical grasp, or when they already have a functional device and want a second limb for community wear. Partial-hand and finger restorations can also protect sensitive residual tissue and fill gloves. They are not designed for heavy loading.
What are the benefits of an upper extremity cosmetic prosthesis?
- More natural appearance at rest and in photographs
- May improve confidence in public settings
- Can protect residual skin and restore a surface for light stabilizing tasks
- Can be worn as a second device alongside a work or myoelectric system
