UCBL Foot Orthoses
What are UCBL foot orthoses?
A UCBL (University of California Biomechanics Laboratory) orthosis is a deep, rigid, custom foot orthosis with a high heel cup and medial and lateral flanges that wrap the heel and midfoot. It contains the heel instead of supporting the arch with a standard insert. It usually needs a deeper, wider shoe than a typical insole.
Why are UCBL foot orthoses used?
UCBLs are prescribed for flexible flatfoot, hindfoot valgus, and other conditions in which the heel rolls out and the midfoot collapses and a standard orthotic does not hold the heel. They are used in children and adults when greater three-plane control of the rearfoot and midfoot is required, including some cases of posterior tibial tendon dysfunction. They are less suitable when the deformity is rigid and cannot be reduced.
What are the benefits of UCBL foot orthoses?
- Provides more hindfoot and midfoot control than a standard arch support
- Helps hold a flexible heel closer to a neutral position
- May improve stability and reduce compensatory strain further up the limb
- Can be posted and adjusted as the foot or the shoe changes
