Scoliosis corrective devices are specialized spinal braces designed to help manage scoliosis, a condition in which the spine curves sideways in an abnormal "S" or "C" shape. These braces are primarily used for children and adolescents whose bones are still growing, although they may also be prescribed for some adults to provide support and pain relief.
The goal of a scoliosis brace is not to permanently straighten the spine, but to prevent the curve from worsening, promote better spinal alignment, and, in some cases, achieve partial correction while the spine is still growing. Bracing can often reduce the need for surgery when used consistently and as prescribed.
What are the Common Types of Scoliosis Corrective Devices?
- Custom Thoraco-Lumbo-Sacral Orthosis (TLSO): A custom-molded rigid brace that supports the thoracic, lumbar, and sacral spine to help control scoliosis progression. It is commonly prescribed for moderate spinal curves in growing children and adolescents.
- ScoliBrace®: A custom-designed 3D corrective brace that is individually manufactured based on the patient's spinal curve and body shape. It aims to improve spinal alignment, posture, and trunk symmetry while helping prevent curve progression.
- Boston Brace: A low-profile rigid TLSO worn under clothing to help prevent scoliosis curves from worsening during growth. It is one of the most commonly prescribed braces for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
- SpineCor® Brace: A flexible, dynamic brace that uses elastic bands to gently guide the spine toward improved alignment while allowing natural movement. It is typically recommended for selected children and adolescents with mild to moderate scoliosis.
- Milwaukee Brace: A rigid cervico-thoraco-lumbo-sacral orthosis (CTLSO) that extends from the pelvis to the neck to control high thoracic spinal curves. It is used when greater stabilization is needed than a standard TLSO can provide.
- Charleston Bending Brace: A custom nighttime brace that holds the spine in an overcorrected position while the patient sleeps. It is most effective for selected patients with single, flexible scoliosis curves.
- Providence Nighttime Brace: A rigid brace worn only during sleep that applies targeted corrective forces to the spine. It is designed for certain mild to moderate scoliosis curves and offers an alternative to full-time daytime bracing.
When are Scoliosis Corrective Devices Recommended?
Scoliosis corrective devices may be recommended when:
- A child or adolescent has a moderate spinal curve that is at risk of worsening during growth.
- The spine is still growing, making bracing more effective in controlling curve progression.
- The scoliosis curve has shown signs of progression on follow-up X-rays or clinical examinations.
- Postural support is needed to improve spinal alignment and balance.
- After certain spinal surgeries, to protect and support the spine during healing, when recommended by the surgeon.
- An adult with scoliosis experiences pain or instability, where a brace may provide additional support and improve comfort.
- The goal is to delay or avoid surgery by preventing further progression of the spinal curve.
What are the Benefits of Scoliosis Corrective Devices?
When properly fitted and worn as prescribed, scoliosis braces can offer several benefits, including:
- Slowing or preventing progression of spinal curvature
- Improving spinal alignment and posture
- Supporting healthy spinal growth during adolescence
- Reducing the likelihood of surgical intervention
- Providing spinal stability and comfort during daily activities
- Helping maintain balance and body symmetry
Because every scoliosis curve is unique, braces should be prescribed, custom-fitted, and regularly monitored by an orthotist and healthcare provider to ensure optimal results.
What Happens During Scoliosis Corrective Devices Treatment?
During scoliosis corrective device treatment, the process is carefully tailored to your individual spinal curve and treatment goals.
- Comprehensive Evaluation: Your healthcare provider evaluates your spine using a physical examination and imaging studies, such as X-rays, to determine the severity and location of the curve.
- Brace Selection and Fitting: A custom-made or prefabricated scoliosis brace is selected and carefully fitted to provide the appropriate corrective support while ensuring comfort.
- Wear Schedule: You will receive specific instructions on how many hours each day the brace should be worn. The recommended wear time varies depending on your age, growth stage, and the severity of the scoliosis.
- Adjustment Period: It may take several days or weeks to become comfortable wearing the brace. Your care team will provide guidance on proper use, skin care, and activity modifications.
- Regular Follow-Up Visits: Periodic appointments are scheduled to monitor spinal growth, assess the effectiveness of the brace, and make adjustments as needed to maintain the best possible fit and correction.
- Ongoing Monitoring: Treatment continues until skeletal growth is complete or until your healthcare provider determines that bracing is no longer necessary. Throughout treatment, the goal is to prevent the spinal curve from progressing while maintaining comfort and mobility.
