PRAFO® and PFS Med AFOs
Personalized Solutions. Greater Mobility.
Don’t let mobility challenges hold you back. Our experienced team provides custom orthotic and prosthetic solutions designed around your needs, comfort, and goals.
PRAFO® (Pressure Relief Ankle-Foot Orthosis) and PFS Med AFOs (Posterior Foot Splint Medical Ankle-Foot Orthoses) are specialized ankle-foot orthoses designed to support and protect the foot and ankle, particularly for patients who have limited mobility, weakness, or are spending extended periods in bed.
- PRAFO®: A specialized orthosis designed to relieve pressure from the heel, maintain the ankle in a neutral position, and help prevent or manage complications such as heel pressure injuries and ankle contractures. It can also assist with positioning the foot and ankle during recovery.
- PFS Med AFO: A posterior-style AFO that helps maintain proper foot and ankle positioning, provide gentle support, and reduce the risk of plantar-flexion contractures, particularly in patients with neurological conditions or limited mobility.
Both devices are typically customized or adjusted to the patient's needs and may be used as part of a broader rehabilitation or orthopedic treatment plan.
When are PRAFO® and PFS Med AFOs Recommended?
PRAFO® AFOs are commonly recommended for patients who need heel pressure relief, ankle positioning, or prevention of ankle contractures, particularly during prolonged bed rest or rehabilitation. They may also be used after neurological conditions, injuries, or surgery when maintaining proper foot and ankle alignment is important.
PFS Med AFOs may be recommended for patients with foot drop, ankle weakness, instability, or abnormal foot positioning who need support during standing or walking. The specific AFO design is selected according to the patient's strength, range of motion, gait pattern, and functional needs.
What Can You Expect During PRAFO® and PFS Med AFO Treatment?
Treatment typically begins with an assessment of the foot, ankle, skin condition, range of motion, muscle strength, and positioning needs. An orthotist will select and adjust the appropriate PRAFO® or PFS Med AFO to provide proper support without creating excessive pressure. The device is then fitted around the foot and lower leg and may be used for specific periods during the day or while resting, depending on the patient's needs. Patients may initially notice pressure or unfamiliarity while wearing the orthosis, but it should not cause significant pain, numbness, or skin irritation. Follow-up visits may be recommended to check the fit, skin condition, ankle position, and overall effectiveness and make adjustments as needed.
What are the Benefits of PRAFO® and PFS Med AFOs?
The key benefits of PRAFO® and PFS Med AFOs include the following:
- Supports proper ankle and foot alignment
- Helps control unwanted ankle movement
- May assist with foot-drop management
- Helps maintain ankle range of motion and reduce contracture risk
- Can protect vulnerable heel and foot areas
- May improve stability during standing and walking
- Can be adjusted to accommodate individual positioning needs
Summary
PRAFO® and PFS Med AFOs are specialized ankle-foot orthoses used to support proper foot and ankle positioning, improve stability, and help manage conditions such as foot drop, weakness, and limited ankle motion. PRAFO® devices are particularly useful for pressure relief, positioning, and preventing ankle contractures, while PFS Med AFOs are generally focused on providing functional support and controlling ankle and foot movement during mobility. The appropriate device is selected based on the patient's condition, mobility, and clinical goals.
