Don’t let mobility challenges hold you back. Our experienced team provides custom orthotic and prosthetic solutions designed around your needs, comfort, and goals.
Post-Traumatic Cervical Thoracic Orthoses (CTOs) are rigid braces designed to stabilize and support the cervical (neck) and upper thoracic (upper back) spine after a traumatic injury. Unlike a standard cervical collar, a CTO extends over the chest and upper back, providing greater restriction of neck movement and improved protection during healing.
What are the Conditions Treated with Post-Traumatic CTOs?
Post-traumatic CTOs are commonly prescribed for:
- Stable cervical spine fractures
- Ligament injuries of the cervical spine
- Upper thoracic spine fractures
- Whiplash injuries with significant instability
- Postoperative stabilization following cervical or upper thoracic spine surgery
- Recovery from spinal trauma while avoiding or delaying surgery in appropriate cases
How Do Post-Traumatic CTOs Work?
A post-traumatic CTO helps by:
- Limiting neck flexion, extension, side bending, and rotation
- Stabilizing the cervical and upper thoracic spine
- Reducing stress on injured bones, ligaments, and soft tissues
- Promoting proper spinal alignment during healing
- Helping decrease pain by minimizing unwanted movement
What are the Common Types of Post-Traumatic CTOs?
Some commonly prescribed post-traumatic CTOs include:
- Miami JTO® – Provides rigid immobilization for cervical and upper thoracic injuries.
- Aspen CTO® – Offers adjustable support and enhanced patient comfort while restricting movement.
- Philadelphia CTO – Combines a cervical collar with thoracic support for improved spinal stabilization.
- SOMI (Sterno-Occipital Mandibular Immobilizer) – Particularly effective at limiting neck flexion and commonly used for upper cervical injuries.
What are the Benefits of Post-Traumatic CTOs?
Benefits of post-traumatic CTOs include:
- Provides greater stability than a cervical collar alone
- Supports proper healing of spinal injuries
- Helps reduce pain and muscle strain
- May reduce the need for surgery in selected stable injuries
- Allows safer performance of daily activities while protecting the spine
When is a Post-Traumatic CTO Recommended?
Your healthcare provider may recommend a post-traumatic CTO if your injury requires more support than a standard cervical collar can provide. The brace is typically worn for 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the location and severity of the injury, your healing progress, and your physician's recommendations.
What Can You Expect During Treatment?
Your CTO will be professionally fitted to provide the appropriate level of support and immobilization. Your healthcare team will show you how to properly wear, remove, and care for the brace, along with tips to protect your skin from irritation. Regular follow-up visits allow your provider to monitor healing, adjust the fit if necessary, and determine when the brace can be discontinued. As your spine heals, you may begin a supervised rehabilitation program to gradually restore strength, flexibility, and normal function.
