Partial Foot
What is a partial foot prosthesis?
A partial-foot prosthesis or filler replaces toes or a portion of the foot after ray resection, transmetatarsal, Lisfranc, Chopart, or similar amputations. It may be a toe filler in a shoe, a custom insert with a carbon plate, a forefoot prosthesis, or an ankle-foot orthosis with a filler, depending on how much of the foot remains and how the ankle functions.
Why is a partial foot prosthesis used?
Partial foot amputation is used to remove diseased or damaged tissue while keeping as much length as is safe. The remaining foot has a shorter lever, less push-off, and often high pressure at the end of the residual foot. The device restores shoe shape, protects the end of the residual foot, and, when needed, restores a lever for roll-over. Skin care remains critical, especially in diabetic or dysvascular patients.
What are the benefits of a partial foot prosthesis?
- Fills the shoe so the residual foot does not slide
- Protects the amputation site from peak pressure
- May restore a more even roll-over and reduce limp
- Preserves more of the natural limb than a Syme’s or transtibial amputation when that is surgically appropriate
