Leg Caddies

What are leg caddies?

A leg caddy is a crutch substitute with a lower-leg platform, with or without wheels (HCPCS E0118). The patient rests the shin or knee of the injured or amputated side on the platform and propels with the other leg. The group includes knee walkers/scooters and related platform devices (one trade name in this class is Turning Leg Caddy). It is not a walking boot and not a prosthesis.

Why are leg caddies used?

These devices are used when the foot or ankle must stay off the ground after injury, surgery, or selected below-knee conditions, and standard crutches or a walker are unsafe or not usable, for example because of limited arm strength or only one functional arm. They are a mobility aid for a non-weight-bearing period, not a long-term replacement for healing or for a prosthesis.

What are the benefits of leg caddies?

  • Offloads the foot and ankle while allowing household mobility
  • Keeps the hands freer than axillary crutches for many users
  • May be easier to tolerate than crutches when the upper body cannot take load
  • Requires flat, indoor-type surfaces, training, and enough strength on the sound side. It does not shorten the prescribed non-weight-bearing period
