Immobilizing Slings
What are immobilizing slings?
An immobilizing sling supports the forearm in a bent position and limits how much the shoulder can move. A simple sling cradles the arm. A shoulder immobilizer adds a body strap or wrap to further restrict rotation and lifting.
Why are immobilizing slings used?
Slings are used after selected fractures, dislocations, sprains, and surgeries of the shoulder, elbow, or arm. The goal is to rest injured tissues, reduce pain from unsupported weight of the arm, and prevent movements that could disrupt healing. Duration is typically weeks and depends on the injury and the physician’s instructions.
What are the benefits of immobilizing slings?
- Supports the weight of the arm
- Limits unplanned shoulder motion during daily activity and sleep
- May reduce pain in the early healing phase
- Is generally easy to don and doff for hygiene when the clinician allows it
