Elbow Range of Motion (ROM) Orthoses
What are elbow range of motion (ROM) orthoses?
Elbow ROM orthoses are adjustable braces that gradually restore bending or straightening of a stiff elbow. Designs include static-progressive devices (the angle is set and held, then advanced) and dynamic devices (a spring or similar force applies a low, prolonged stretch). The setting is changed on a schedule from the therapist or physician, not all at once.
Why are elbow ROM orthoses used?
Elbows often lose motion after fracture, dislocation, burns, or surgery. Scar and capsular tightness do not always respond to exercise alone. A ROM orthosis applies a controlled stretch over hours, which is a standard adjunct in the treatment of selected elbow contractures. It is not a substitute for a fracture that still needs to be protected, and it should not be advanced through sharp pain or swelling.
What are the benefits of elbow ROM orthoses?
- Delivers a prolonged, adjustable stretch at a set angle
- May improve flexion or extension in selected stiff elbows
- Can be used at home between therapy visits
- May reduce the need for additional contracture surgery in some patients when progress is adequate
