Diabetic Foot Orthotics
What are diabetic foot orthotics?
Diabetic foot orthotics are accommodative insoles, often paired with extra-depth or therapeutic shoes. They are designed to spread pressure, cushion bony areas, and reduce shear rather than to “correct” the foot aggressively. Materials are usually multilayer foams or similar cushioning, sometimes with reliefs under ulcers or prominent bones.
Why are diabetic foot orthotics used?
Diabetes can cause neuropathy, poor circulation, and foot deformity. Loss of protective sensation means a person may not feel a hotspot until a blister or ulcer has formed. Therapeutic footwear and inserts are a standard part of preventing and managing diabetic foot ulcers in at-risk patients, along with daily foot inspection, glucose control, and wound care when needed. They do not treat the neuropathy itself.
What are the benefits of diabetic foot orthotics?
- Cushions and offloads high-pressure areas
- May lower the risk of skin breakdown in at-risk feet when worn consistently
- Creates room in extra-depth shoes for dressings or deformity
- Supports a larger diabetic foot-care plan rather than replacing it
