Custom-Molded Orthopaedic Shoes

What are custom-molded orthopaedic shoes?

Custom-molded orthopaedic shoes are built on a model of the patient’s feet. The last, depth, width, and closures are chosen to fit deformity, swelling, or a prescribed insert, rather than forcing the foot into a retail shoe. Extra-depth therapeutic shoes (which are modified but not fully custom-molded) are a related, less intensive option when the foot still fits a standard last.

Why are custom-molded orthopaedic shoes used?

These shoes are used when bunions, hammertoes, Charcot changes, post-surgical deformity, or significant volume difference make regular footwear unsafe or intolerable. They are also used when a patient needs both an accommodative insert and enough room that an off-the-shelf extra-depth shoe cannot provide. They are typically prescribed, measured, and fitted by a certified pedorthist or orthotist.

What are the benefits of custom-molded orthopaedic shoes?

  • Matches the shape of a deformed or swollen foot
  • Leaves volume for custom orthotics, dressings, or bracing
  • May reduce pressure, rubbing, and skin breakdown
  • Can be modified (closures, rocker soles, lifts) as needs change
