Custom and Prefabricated Foot Orthotics
What are custom and prefabricated foot orthotics?
Foot orthotics are shoe inserts that support the arch, cushion the sole, or change how load is shared across the foot. Prefabricated (off-the-shelf) devices come in standard sizes and shapes. Custom orthotics are made from a model of the patient’s foot, typically a cast, foam impression, or digital scan, and can be posted or modified to a prescription.
Why are custom and prefabricated foot orthotics used?
Physicians and pedorthists use orthotics for plantar fasciitis, arch pain, selected tendinopathies, mild to moderate alignment issues, and pressure problems that do not yet require a more aggressive device. Prefabricated inserts may be enough for milder symptoms. Custom devices are often chosen when the foot is asymmetrical, the problem is more severe, or a standard insert has failed.
What are the benefits of custom and prefabricated foot orthotics?
- Redistributes pressure under the foot
- May reduce pain with standing and walking in selected conditions
- Can improve shoe comfort and tolerance of activity
- Custom devices can be adjusted as symptoms or footwear change
