Custom Anatomical Sockets
What are custom anatomical sockets?
The socket is the custom-molded interface between the residual limb and the rest of the prosthesis. An anatomical socket is shaped from a cast or scan of the patient’s limb so that load is shared over appropriate areas and bony prominences are relieved. Liners, socks, and suspension (how the limb stays on) are part of the same system.
Why are custom anatomical sockets used?
A poorly matched socket causes pain, skin breakdown, and instability, no matter how advanced the foot or knee is. Residual limbs are not cylindrical, and they change with weight, activity, and time of day. Custom sockets are used so the prosthesis can be worn for useful periods without damaging skin or sacrificing control. Follow-up adjustments are expected, especially in the first year.
What are the benefits of custom anatomical sockets?
- Distributes pressure more evenly than a generic socket
- Improves comfort, suspension, and control when well fitted
- Protects skin over scars and bony areas
- Can be replaced or relined as the limb matures without replacing every component
