Cubital Tunnel Splints

What are cubital tunnel splints?

A cubital tunnel splint is an elbow orthosis, often padded, that keeps the elbow from bending fully. Night splints typically hold the elbow closer to a straighter position so the ulnar nerve is not stretched behind the medial epicondyle (the “funny bone”).

Why are cubital tunnel splints used?

Cubital tunnel syndrome is compression or irritation of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. Symptoms often include numbness in the ring and little fingers and can worsen with prolonged elbow flexion, leaning on the elbow, or sleeping with the arm curled. AAOS describes bracing or splinting, usually at night, as a common nonsurgical treatment, together with activity modification.

What are the benefits of cubital tunnel splints?

  • Limits deep elbow bending during sleep
  • Reduces traction and pressure on the ulnar nerve
  • May improve numbness and nighttime symptoms in mild to moderate cases
  • Can be used while awaiting further treatment if symptoms persist or weakness develops
