Carpal Tunnel Splints
What are carpal tunnel splints?
A carpal tunnel splint is a wrist orthosis that holds the wrist in a straight, or slightly extended, neutral position. The fingers and thumb usually remain free. Night splints are the most common design. Some patients also wear a splint during the day for tasks that aggravate symptoms.
Why are carpal tunnel splints used?
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed at the wrist. Many people sleep with the wrist bent, which raises pressure in the tunnel and can wake them with numbness in the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers. AAOS guidance lists nighttime wrist splinting as a first-line nonsurgical measure, along with activity changes and, when needed, other medical treatment.
What are the benefits of carpal tunnel splints?
- Keeps the wrist from bending during sleep
- Reduces pressure on the median nerve in a neutral position
- May lessen nighttime numbness, tingling, and pain in selected patients
- Is a low-risk option before, or alongside, injections or surgery when those are being considered
