BK (Below knee)
What is a below-knee (BK) prosthesis?
A below-knee, or transtibial, prosthesis is used when the amputation is below the knee and the natural knee joint is preserved. Typical parts include a custom socket, liner, suspension, pylon, and prosthetic foot. The remaining thigh and knee still power and control walking.
Why is a below-knee (BK) prosthesis used?
Transtibial amputation is performed for vascular disease, diabetes-related complications, trauma, infection, or tumor when the foot and ankle cannot be saved but the knee can. Keeping the knee generally makes walking less energy-costly than an above-knee amputation. The prosthesis restores a foot and ankle lever so the person can stand and walk on a level and, with training, on varied terrain.
What are the benefits of a below-knee (BK) prosthesis?
- Preserves the biological knee for more natural control
- Usually requires less energy to walk than a transfemoral prosthesis
- Allows a wide range of feet to match activity level
- Supports return to many daily and, for some patients, recreational activities
