Abduction Devices
What are abduction devices?
An abduction device is a shoulder orthosis that holds the arm slightly away from the body, often with a pillow or wedge between the arm and the torso. The usual position is a modest abduction angle set by the surgeon or orthotist, not a fully raised arm.
Why are abduction devices used?
These devices are commonly prescribed after rotator cuff repair, selected labral procedures, or other shoulder operations in which the tendon or capsule should not rest tightly against the side. Holding the arm off the chest can reduce strain on the repair while it heals. Wear time and allowed motion follow the surgical protocol, not a one-size schedule.
What are the benefits of abduction devices?
- Keeps the shoulder in a prescribed, protected position
- May lessen tension on a repaired rotator cuff tendon
- Supports the arm so the patient does not have to hold it away from the body unaided
- Can be combined with a sling or immobilizer when more control is needed
